Whole Foods Coma

I had a moment today in Whole Foods on 25th and 7th Avenue. I was somewhere between completely exhausted and mesmerized by the assortment of delicious-looking dried fruit when I completely froze, unable to move. Usually I just feel hungry ...overwhelmed or maybe inspired, even ...healthy? (I dont think walking around a grocery store counts as exercise.) But combine that feeling with a tinge of tired and I'm paralyzed. A friend of mine in the city has three words to say about the Whole Foods on Bowery and Houston, "Love, love, love." ...Love the fact that it covers an entire city block? Amazing. (She also says all the others can suck it.)

I Recommend Trying These...

I love these things... essential oil, antibacterial towelettes by Herban Essentials. The bag that I bought came with peppermint (for invigorating and energizing), lemon (for revitalizing and uplifting), and lavender (for calming). I keep them in a drawer of my desk at work and there are suggestions on the package for all kinds of uses such as wiping off keyboards, dispeling nausea, or massaging the back of your neck to relieve headaches. I used a lavender towelette last night while I was watching a movie with a friend and almost immediately fell asleep ...then again, it could've been the wine.

I've been working on an article lately featuring a friend of mine, Pete, a beekeeper and avid skier (among other things) who launched his own chapstick company, Uncle Pete's Lip Lube, with great success. When I recently asked him how he would describe his skiing style he sent me on a goose chase in search of Igor Stravinsky's Pas d'action from Apollo and said I would find my answer there. Part of being a writer is having an appreciation for being sidetracked, and Pas d'action led me to a wonderful quote:

I don't know how I feel about this...

Competitive yoga? Yesterday the NYTimes published a piece about the 7th annual New York Regional Yoga Championships hosted by the United States Yoga Federation and how competitive yoga is supposedly on the rise in popularity. Don't get me wrong, I practice nearly every day and I have certainly drank the kool-aid, but this is taking things a little too far. And get this, the winner gets a free massage. No kidding.

THIS GUY is a fashion designer?

So... I've seen this guy, Waris Ahluwalia, pop up all over the place in photos lately. I know him as one of my favorite characters from The Darjeeling Limited, but as it turns out, he is also a talented fashion designer and was nominated as one of the CFDA's nine finalists this year. Imagine my surprise... "Ahluwalia out on the town more than ever lately, customary glass of mineral water in hand. For Halloween he co-hosted a shindig at the Wooly, the new private event space dreamed up by his sometime collaborator Eric Adolfsen. A few nights before that, he showed off his latest Omnia Vincit Amor jewelry collection at Phillips de Pury. And just last week, he was the guest of honor at a party hosted by the permanent representative of India to the United Nations, Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri, in celebration of the new Assouline book he co-edited, To India With Love. I'm a coat and jacket kind of girl. I have waay too many and I'm pretty sure that I inherited the knack from my Dad, who also owns plenty of jackets. So, you can imagine how difficult it's been for me to weed through my collection in anticipation of my upcoming move. I have a similar vintage black version of this coat that I bought at a terrific vintage store in Niwot, Colorado. Seeing this photo inspired me to hold on to this timeless classic once and for all.

Carbondale Residents Take Publishing Into Their Own Hands

Residents in Carbondale, Colorado have taken it amongst themselves to fill the void left by the recent collapse of the Carbondale Valley Journal. The paper's 1975 founder, Rebecca Young, puts it this way: replacing the Journal with the newly-founded nonprofit paper, Sopris Sun, "...just beat the dickens out of sitting around whining that our paper was dead." I have nothing against hippies, but this was nuts. Two people started hugging in front of me and didn't let go for like 7 minutes (I counted), and I was like, 'Oh, shit, I hope she is okay. I hope no one died,' and then their arms broke apart and she was like, 'Wow, that was great. Thanks' ....ahh...ok?"

Trevor Sparks, Gentleman Extraordinaire

My cousin Trevor and I grew up in a tight-knit family (our mothers are sisters) and we're roughly the same age. Between tours to Iraq and training camps, Trevor used to come snowboarding with my sister and I in Colorado. I remember a conversation I had with him several years ago, while I was still in college, where I told him that I envied his financial independence and self-sufficiency. He told me that he envied my education and political world-view. Chosing to enlist in the military straight out of high school put money in Trevor's pocket and more hair on his chest than anyone expected. Though our paths during our early-twenties could not have been more different, we shared a world of powder and innocence on the mountain for one week every winter. Years later, our roles are somewhat reversed, and the courageous story of Trevor's time in service recently appeared on the front page of the Sacremento News & Review. Philippe Petit: Man on Wire

In 1974 Philippe Petit successfully walked across a high wire between New York's Twin Towers. I knew I was going to have to watch this documentary when it won an Oscar for Best Documentary this year, and it is safe to say I couldn't relax for the first twenty minutes. The film explores the preparations that went into the stunt as well as the event and its aftermath. It is a deeply poetic and beautiful documentary that I highly recommend.

(Side note, I always find this odd talking to someone I know in a public venue such as their Facebook wall. It's like talking loudly about a date ina crowded elevator... So, we can talk later when we getoff the elevator. Peace man. ...See, like right there. totally pretentious. that comment isn't foryou. That comment is to be clever. Or weird. Or something. Okay, maybe I'm just a pretentious bastard and I can't help it, like right now in this pretentious side note.)

Point is, does anyone know why we write on people's [Facebook] walls instead of sending them a personal message? I guess because it's safer to keep people at arm's distance because direct messages digitally is practically hugging. So consider this a hardy handshake with short, but meaningful, eye contact. That sounds uncomfortable.

Oh yeah, and one more thing. It just struck me. It's really because we're all closet voyeurs and exhibitionists flapping our fking feathers (hoping only the right people stalk us) to show we have friends and are connected and social and those freaks who create this slideshow of every single weekend with a bunch of uncropped photos of the same 3 people smiling the same smile in 7 locations, faces completely void of any real emotion to show that they have fun consistently and are beautiful. That's what it is.

TIP OF THE DAY: Put your popularity in check

A great way to put your popularity in check -or teach your high and mighty friend a lesson, is to forget your cell phone at home (or purposely hide hers).

We've all accidentally forgotten our phone at home at some point or another and spent the entire time daydreaming about all of the calls we're missing from all of our friends who are so desperately trying to get a hold of us. This type of thinking will inevitably make you feel like shit when you get home and find out that you have zero missed calls (or maybe one from your parents).

The goal here is to keep your expectations low by saying things like, "Well, I already told everyone I wouldn't be available today, so I'm not expecting any calls," and other lies to let those around you know how well you're dealing with this. If you suffer from technology separation anxiety, start slow. Leave your phone at home for an hour while you run an errand, then work your way up to an entire day.

You never have as many missed calls as you imagine, and you're really not as popular as you think.
